At the beginning of the pandemic I was upset because I lost my job. I did everything to get a new one ASAP and I did. I was hoping the pandemic would be over soon and we could all go back to normal. But really what I wanted most was to go back to travelling. Now – a year later – I see things differently. I do not only see the negative perspective of the corona outbreak but the chances it gives us.
When the pandemic started, during the first lockdown, my life didn’t really change because I found a new job in a supermarket. The only thing that changed was myself which I realized by the way I talked to people. I wasn’t rude, not at all, but after Australia I just realized how much Austrians love to complain. I stopped keeping my mouth shut but instead started to give people honest answers and thoughts. For example the one woman was complaing about how she hated to wear a face mask but she really felt sorry for me because “poor me” had to wear it all day. That was when I told her that she didn’t need to feel sorry for me nor for her because on our planet children are dying every few seconds. I really caught her off guard with that answer. She thought a few seconds about what I said and then replied to me that I was right but still she didn’t want the government to tell her what she had to do. I answered that there are worse things in life and really we can do anything, we just need to wear masks and we are not homeless and have enough food unlike people after world war 2. She didn’t have an answer for that so she just left but not in a bad way and looking after her I could still see how she was thinking about what I said. That was all I wanted. Make her think about how good her life is.
I didn’t work long in this job because I didn’t like it and soon after the first lockdown was over I got my old job back and I was very happy about it.
I also started studying additionally to my job a month later and moved to a new apartment so I was a bit stressed at that point. Until in November the second lockdown started. Thinking back two years ago not working for a couple of weeks was my nightmare. But soon I realised that that has changed as well (Australia played a part in that too). Unlike many others who hate to be at home and do nothing I started doing things I wanted to do for a while, things I never had time to do because I was always too busy. It started small like taking walks, cooking or doing more tik toks. Until my sister told me her friends who have a studio came to visit and I should go with them and record a song.
Recording my own song was always a childhood dream of mine but I never thought I would actually do it one day because I was always “too busy”. In December shops opened up again for three weeks and then the third lockdown came and I did use the time to write the song and go to the studio to record it. When I came home after the recording I also started to learn keyboard. Plus I had enough time to do more plasma donations and to study.
So what can I say? Instead of complaining and overthinking I started DOING! Really it’s up to each and everyone of us to make the most out of a situation that we can’t change, to use the extra time given to us and taking our chances to let our dreams become reality. And who knows? Maybe we will all succeed. Oh and by the way soon I’ll record my second song 😉
